Contra Costa County Honors Local Businesses for Food Safety

Tuesday, March 19, 2019

The Contra Costa Board of Supervisors honored more than 200 local businesses on Tuesday for demonstrating outstanding food safety and sanitation standards during recent health inspections.

The inaugural Food Safety Excellence Awards, issued by Contra Costa Health Services' Environmental Health Division (CCEH), recognizes holders of commercial food permits in Contra Costa that passed at least three routine inspections during the past two years without any major violations.

"These businesses are doing their part to keep our community safe and healthy by reducing the potential for foodborne illness," said Supervisor John Gioia, chair of the board. "We want to hold them up as responsible community partners and examples of how to operate successful food facilities in Contra Costa County."

The 237 recognized food establishments include restaurants, schools, full-service delis, skilled nursing facilities, grocery stores and markets and detention facilities.

Depending on the type of business and food preparation, county food permit holders receive between one and three routine health inspections annually. When CCEH inspectors find major health violations, they place yellow or red placards in public view.

The honorees all got only green placards from inspectors since the program began in 2017, meaning there was no evidence of major violations such as improper handwashing, improper cooking and holding temperatures, poor sanitation, contaminated food or signs of vermin.

CCEH wanted to recognize each type of food facility in the county and chose five facilities to represent each supervisorial district to attend the March 19 Board of Supervisors meeting to receive the board commendation. The representative honorees are: De Anza High School in Richmond, China Palace in Walnut Creek, Panda Express #950 in Brentwood, Safeway #1541 in Pleasant Hill, and Alhambra Convalescent Hospital in Martinez.
