What:

Contra Costa Health Services staff is teaming up with other agencies to educate the public on identifying the signs of stroke. Staff will distribute stroke prevention information at three Contra Costa County BART stations on May 7.

Who:

The event is being coordinated by Contra Costa Health Service's Emergency Medical Services, the Darius Jones Foundation, the Pacific Stroke Association, BART and local hospitals, fire departments and ambulance providers.

When:

Tuesday, May 7, National Stroke Alert Day, from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Where:

The Walnut Creek, Richmond and Pittsburg/Bay Point BART stations.

Why:

Stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of adult disability. Acting fast can save lives and prevent brain damage.

If you notice signs of stroke such as an uneven smile, slurred speech or one abnormally weak arm, call 911 immediately and wait for an ambulance. Do NOT transport a stroke victim in a private vehicle.
