WHAT:

Contra Costa Health Services Director William Walker, MD, talks about the painful choices that must be made to balance the county’s budget in the latest CCHS podcast. The proposed budget cuts include a plan to exclude any Contra Costans who are undocumented, non-citizens, ages 19 and older from non-emergency outpatient services at CCHS Health Centers. Medical services will continue to be provided to all pregnant women and children. CCHS also will continue, as required by to everyone. In addition, significant cuts will be made to Public Health, Mental Health and the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez.

WHEN:

WHY:

Contra Costa County, like many other counties in California, is facing staggering budget deficits. CCHS was directed to cut $13.5 million to help balance the county budget. Restricting eligibility will save an estimated $6 million a year alone.
