Toy-testing event protects children from lead poisoning
February 3, 2009
What:
Following up on recent reports that high levels of lead have been found in certain children´s toys, Contra Costa Health Services´ Contra Costa Lead Poisoning Prevention Project is co-sponsoring a free, one-day toy-testing event in Concord. Parents can bring in their children´s toys to be tested and will receive instant results about the potential hazard. New toys that test positive may be eligible for cash exchange on location. Testing will be performed by the Center for Environmental Health and the event is co-sponsored by the Monument Community Partnership.
When:
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, February 11, 2009
Where:
Monument Community Partnership, 1760 Clayton Road, Concord, 94520
Why:
Millions of metal, plastic, and painted wooden toys have been recalled because they contain lead. Lead can seriously harm a child´s development, learning and behavior. Children can be checked for lead by a simple blood test. For a list of recalled toys, visit www.cdc.gov/nceh/lead/Recalls. For more information about lead poisoning, visit www.cchealth.org/topics/lead_poison or call 1-866-FIX-LEAD.
