Richmond residents are invited to attend a community workshop to come up with action plans that ensure the Richmond General Plan, which is currently being updated, includes policies and land use options that protect residents from air pollution, noise and other impacts due to freight transportation.

A light dinner will be provided.

Who:

The meeting is being hosted by Project 12898: Solutions for West County Land Use and Environmental Justice, which includes, the Neighborhood House of North Richmond, Pacific Institute, the West County Toxics Coalition, and Contra Costa Health Services.

Why:

Diesel pollution is linked to cancer, asthma, heart disease, premature death and other health problems. Trucks, trains and ships transporting freight in and through West County are a major source of diesel pollution. A recent study found there is almost six times more diesel particulate matter pollution released per square mile in West County neighborhoods than in the County as a whole. Asthma hospitalization rates for Inner West Contra Costa are twice the average rate for the County as a whole.

Noise and vibration from passing trucks and trains can disturb sleep and cause anxiety and learning difficulties. A 2007 study of noise level in 10 places in Richmond found that seven out of 10 had illegally high levels of noise.

Building businesses in West County that attract trucks and trains could expose residents to more noise, pollution and other impacts.
