The Contra Costa community has the opportunity to help underserved women with cancer and learn a time-honored skill as well.

Contra Costa Health Services, Mt Diablo Medical Center and The Raging Light Quilt Project are inviting community members to join a free Quilting Bee on February 21. Attendees will learn the art of quilt making and all supplies will be provided. The event will take place at the Mt. Diablo Medical Center, 2540 East Street Concord, Conference Rooms Concord 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

"We hope that many people attend the quilting bee. These beautiful lap quilts provide cancer patients with much needed comfort during their treatment process," said Andrea DuBrow, Senior Health Educator with Contra Costa Health Services Women's Health Partnership.

According to DuBrow, no experience with quilting is needed. Expert quilters will be at the event to share their skills and to teach beginning quilters.

"It is always amazing to see the beautiful lap quilts that are made by the end of the day," said DuBrow. "They are breathtaking."

She said once the quilts are completed, her program distributes them to local agencies that provide clinical and social services to women with cancer. The quilts are given to the women as gifts.

"Women have told us that receiving a quilt boosts their spirits as they go through the cancer treatment process," said DuBrow.
