WHAT

Bike Rodeo: An interactive event to promote bike safety

WHEN

Thursday, June 10, 2004 1 - 3 p.m.

WHERE

Downer Elementary School
1777 Sanford Avenue, San Pablo

WHO

Contra Costa Health Services Injury Prevention Program and the City of San Pablo are sponsoring the event, which is part of larger bicycle safety project.

Downer Elementary fourth and fifth graders will ride bicycles, scooters, and skateboards and learn safe riding techniques in a simulated roadway with obstacles.

The program is funded by the California Kids' Plate Fund through the California Center for Injury Prevention Policy and Practice and San Diego State University.

WHY

In California, 22,441 people were severely injured and 619 killed in bicycle-related crashes between 1996-2000. The lifetime costs to care for one person with a traumatic brain injury can exceed $4.6 million.

Summer is the most dangerous time for children's safety. San Pablo has a higher rate of bicycle injuries than the California average. Research shows almost no students in San Pablo wear bike helmets, despite a state law.
