Public Invited to Comment on Chemical Plant Safety Report

Public comment period on the Follow-Up Safety Evaluation for the General Chemical-Richmond Works Plant, where several accidents occurred in 2001

The Follow-Up Safety Evaluation was performed upon a Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors and the Richmond City Council request to determine how effectively General Chemical was addressing the findings and recommendations of the first safety evaluation (completed in October 2002, with the final report issued January 2003)

The Follow-Up Evaluation included quarterly reports on how General Chemical has been addressing the recommendations in the first safety evaluation, as well as a Safety Climate Survey and an onsite evaluation. The 30-day public comment period starts December 15, 2003 and ends January 14, 2004

The report is available online (see above) or by calling Don Nixon at 925-646-2907 or Randy Sawyer at 925-646-2879 or by picking up a copy from the county's Hazardous Materials Programs Office at 4333 Pacheco Boulevard, Martinez

The final report is scheduled to be issued on January 31, 2004, with an oral report to the County Board of Supervisors and the Richmond City Council in early February 2004
